  • Common Black Scorpion (Nebo hierichonticus). This scorpion can reach a length of 85–110 mm. The basic color of this scorpion ranges from a light brown or reddish-brown to dark brown. Legs are yellowish. It has a thin metasoma and large pedipalps and chelae. The base of the sting (vesicle) is oval, with a quite short sting (telson). Venom of this species is quite toxic, causing hemorrhage and necrosis, but the effects of the sting on humans is almost negligible, without any long term effects. Photographed in Israel

  • Human Anatomy The "Essai d'Anatomie" was produced by Gautier D'Agoty in 1745 in Paris, France. It is a remarkably detailed atlas of the head, neck, and shoulder areas of the human body with explanatory text in French. The anatomical images were based on human cadavers dissected by Joseph Duverney (1) and produced using the mezzotint method of engraving and printing. Mezzotint color engraving printing was invented by Jaques Christophe Le Blon in 1719. Mezzotint (from the Italian phrase "mezza tina" or "half tone") prints are produced by engraving a metal plate with numerous small holes that hold ink. When used to make a print, the engraved plate produces large areas of subtle shaded color tones. Since the mezzotint technique is quite labor-intensive, it fell out of favor by the 20th century, although it is still utilized by some artists. Most often used to reproduce paintings by famous artists, mezzotint printing was rarely used for original works of art, making the "Essai d'Anatomie" a work of great scientific and artistic significance.

  • The red spurfowl (Galloperdix spadicea) is a member of the pheasant family and is endemic to India. It is a bird of forests, and is quite secretive despite its size. It has a distinctive call and is often hard to see except for a few seconds when it flushes from the undergrowth. It appears reddish and like a long-tailed partridge. The bare skin around the eye is reddish. The legs of both males and females have one or two spurs, which give them their name. 18th century watercolor painting by Elizabeth Gwillim. Lady Elizabeth Symonds Gwillim (21 April 1763 – 21 December 1807) was an artist married to Sir Henry Gwillim, Puisne Judge at the Madras high court until 1808. Lady Gwillim painted a series of about 200 watercolours of Indian birds. Produced about 20 years before John James Audubon, her work has been acclaimed for its accuracy and natural postures as they were drawn from observations of the birds in life. She also painted fishes and flowers. McGill University Library and Archives

  • Corneille du Cap - The Cape crow or black crow (Corvus capensis) is slightly larger (48–50 cm in length) than the carrion crow and is completely black with a slight gloss of purple in its feathers. It has proportionately longer legs, wings and tail too and has a much longer, slimmer bill that seems to be adapted for probing into the ground for invertebrates. The head feathers have a coppery-purple gloss and the throat feathers are quite long and fluffed out in some calls and displays. from the Book Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique [Natural History of birds of Africa] Volume 2, by Le Vaillant, François, 1753-1824; Publish in Paris by Chez J.J.
