  • purple dye murex (Bolinus brandaris) (Gastropod) on a beach in Israel, a sea snail. Murex was at one time greatly valued as the source for purple dye. It discharges a purple ink from the hypobranchial gland in the mantle cavity as a smoke screen, from behind which it can flee. The Phoenicians, centred on Tyre, gathered the snails, crushed & boiled them with salt for several days to extract the ink. The liquid was allowed to cool & over a period of time the colour changed for yellow to green to blue & then a rich purple. The extraction of the ink & the manufacture of purple cloth made Tyre a household word in the past.

  • Human Anatomy The "Essai d'Anatomie" was produced by Gautier D'Agoty in 1745 in Paris, France. It is a remarkably detailed atlas of the head, neck, and shoulder areas of the human body with explanatory text in French. The anatomical images were based on human cadavers dissected by Joseph Duverney (1) and produced using the mezzotint method of engraving and printing. Mezzotint color engraving printing was invented by Jaques Christophe Le Blon in 1719. Mezzotint (from the Italian phrase "mezza tina" or "half tone") prints are produced by engraving a metal plate with numerous small holes that hold ink. When used to make a print, the engraved plate produces large areas of subtle shaded color tones. Since the mezzotint technique is quite labor-intensive, it fell out of favor by the 20th century, although it is still utilized by some artists. Most often used to reproduce paintings by famous artists, mezzotint printing was rarely used for original works of art, making the "Essai d'Anatomie" a work of great scientific and artistic significance.

  • English Warship Firing a Salute, 1690, Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) Netherlands, 17th century, Oil on canvas<br />
The subject of this painting is a Royal English Navy ship firing a salute to a state barge. The ship depicted here, may be the sixth-rate frigate called the Saudadoes, which was frequently used to carry individuals or parties on official missions. The designation "sixth-rate" indicates that the ship carried 18-28 cannon, which can be detected from the smoke billowing out from the port side of the vessel. It is possible that Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) was familiar with the Saudodoes as there is a drawing of the ship, made by his father, which is now in the British Museum. Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611-1693) was a specialist in pen and ink drawings of marine vessels. He would spend time at sea making sketches of individual ships and the maneuvers of the fleet, which formed the basis of the Younger's oil paintings. Throughout their careers the two artists collaborated on a myriad of images.

  • Common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) A cuttlefish is a carnivorous marine mollusc. It lives on the seabed and feeds at night on other small molluscs, as well as crustaceans and sometimes fish. It has eight tentacles, plus two additional tentacles of greater length used for hunting, mating, and for defence. Sharp suction rings on its tentacles are used to capture prey and bring it to the beak of its mouth at the centre of its tentacles. Siphons are used to squirt water to swim by propulsion and eject an ink cloud for defence. Its eyes and brain are well developed. Photographed of the shores of Israel in the Mediterranean Sea.

  • Day Octopus (Octopus cyanea). (order Octopoda). This marine invertebrate is a cephalopod mollusc. The octopus has a large brain and well-developed eyes. Eight tentacles form a ring around its mouth (a horny beak, not seen). It swims by jet propulsion with its body sac (upper left), or it crawls over rock surfaces. It lives in a cave or a crevice in rocks, emerging to hunt. Its prey is mostly crabs and lobsters, which it paralyses by injecting a poison. Some octopuses can reach a length of over one metre. Octopuses can vary their skin colour and may eject a cloud of ink when alarmed. Photographed in the Red Sea Israel
