  • A Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) hunting seals on rotten sea ice off the north coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard only 500 miles from the North Pole. Climate change poses a huge threat to Polar Bears. As the sea ice retreats, they lose ground and time to hunt their main prey, seals, which they can only hunt on sea ice. Latest research shows that the Arctic will be free of sea ice by the 2050's and Polar Bears will become extinct in the wild.

  • Crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophagus) resting on ice. Despite the name, it does not eat crabs but uses specialised teeth to sieve krill out of the water. It feeds principally at night. It is found on and below the Antarctic pack ice, moving north at the end of summer. The crabeater seal is often scarred due to fighting and attacks by its main predator, the leopard seal. It can reach a length of 2.4 metres and weigh some 300 kilograms. Photographed in Antarctica.

  • Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii). Young pup lying on sea ice. Weddell seals are born singly. They have fine soft hair (lanugo) that turns to a dark thicker coat at about a month. They are born with their permanent dentition and after being breast fed for six weeks, feed on fish and squid. Weddell seals are found throughout the Antarctic, the majority of their social behaviour occurs in water. They have well developed eyes, which assist them in hunting for food and locating breathing holes in the ice. Photographed on Deception Island, South Shetland Islands archipelago, Antarctica.
