  • Yemenite Jews or Yemeni Jews, arrive in Israel in 1949. They were brought out of Yemen by the new state of Israel to give them a secure and safe homeland. Between June 1949 and September 1950, the overwhelming majority of Yemen's Jewish population was transported to Israel in Operation Magic Carpet. After several waves of persecution throughout Yemen, most Yemenite Jews now live in Israel

  • Remain of the Roman Basilica, Ashkelon National park, Israel<br />
Ashkelon is built upon the ruins of past civilizations. This was one of five Philistine city-states. The city also plays a role in biblical history as the place where Delilah cut Samson's hair to sap his strength. Ashkelon was also a great trading center because it lay along the Via Maris, the route linking Egypt with Syria and Mesopotamia. The city became a Christian city in the Byzantine period and was captured by the Muslims in 638 C.E. The Crusaders came next in 1153, but were defeated by Saladin. Richard the Lion Heart led the Crusaders back, but they were eventually driven out in 1280 by Sultan Baybars. The city was then abandoned until 1948 when the Jews of the new State of Israel began to rebuild it.

  • Lake Hula, near sea-level lake formed by a natural dam of basalt, NE Israel; the Jordan River exits from its southern end. In the past few years, following nearly 50 years of an unsuccessful struggle to utilize the drained valley's resources, the State of Israel has finally recognized that successful development can endure only if a balanced compromise between nature and development is reached. Thus, a small section of the former lake and swamp region was recently reflooded in an attempt to prevent further soil deterioration and to revive the nearly extinct ecosystem.
