  • The urnlike insect trap of the carnivorous pitcher plant, Nepenthes pervillei. The pitcher (up to 30cm high) is an elaborate extension of the midrib of the leaf, which forms an insect trap. Its bright colours (often red) & the scent of nectar attract insects. The lid, closed during early development, opens at an angle to prevent rain filling the urn. Insects fall into the pitcher & drown in the sugary liquid produced by the plant & which contains digestive enzymes. Their digested bodies provide nitrogen compounds & proteins to the plant, which are absent from the poor soils they grow in. This is the only carnivorous pitcher plant found in the Seychelles. Photographed on Mount Copolia in the Morne Seychellois National Park

  • Damage and rot caused by insects on a Stapelia plant. Stapelia is a genus of low-growing, spineless, stem succulent plants, predominantly from South Africa. A handful of species are commonly cultivated as pot plants and are even used as rockery plants in countries where the climate permits. Stapelia are good container plants and can grow well under full sun and light to moderate watering. They should be planted in well-drained compost as the stems are prone to rotting if kept moist for long

  • Pancratium sickenbergeri (Desert Daffodil) is a bulbous plant found in Israel, Egypt and the Middle east. Pancratium sickenbergeri is a Saharo-Arabian plant species. It grows in deserts, such as the Negev. The flowers look like the Mediterranean species Pancratium maritimum, but the leaves of P. sickenbergeri are curly and the plant is much smaller. Unusually for the desert, the seeds are distributed by floodwaters when they occur in the winter. Photographed in the Negev Desert, Israel
