  • ENGEDI [Ein Gedi], THE FOUNTAIN OF THE KID ('AIN J1DY). The sparkling limpid water is warm, rather sweet, and impregnated with lime. To the left there is an example of the remarkable esclepiad called in Arabic 'osher ; it bears a bladder-like fruit filled with long silky hairs, used by the Arabs as tinder for their matchlocks.   • RUINS OF ASCALON [Ashkelon or Ashqelon], FROM THE NORTH-EAST. Here there are fine orchards and olive-trees, cultivated by the Egyptian peasants of the neighbouring village of El Jurah. The wild onions of 'Askfilan are celebrated for their delicate flavour. The Romans gave them the name of Ascalonia, hence scalogna (Ital.) and shallot (Allium Ascalonicum). The iron-stained soil of the sandstone strata is annually washed down into the river by the heavy winter rains, and the discolored stream can be traced far out into the blue sea.
