Erysipelas on leg. Close-up of swollen & inflamed skin of a young man. This is due to erysipelas, an acute infection of the skin & subcutaneous tissue. This infection is caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacterium invading tissues via a sore or wound. The disorder starts abruptly with fever, headaches & vomiting. Itchy red patches (erythema) appear on the skin. Within the inflamed area, pimples develop that blister then burst and crust over. Treatment is with penicillin (antibiotic drug).
